Alyssa’s Sari-Sari store
Bright and cheery, how fitting! I popped up a pop-up art exhibition, ‘Alyssa’s Sari-Sari store’ for Cavill Lane’s Arts in the Alley 2022.
With minimal props and materials, I arranged what should give an impression of a sari-sari store, general stores of sorts that are common throughout the Philippines and in other forms in neighbouring countries.
The space became a way to exhibit and present my illustration work, notably Lutong Bahay, along with Kindling and Sage issues that it was featured in. As well, I displayed my film photo + continuous line drawing self portrait piece, a guestbook, and selected phrases/words in Tagalog with special significance and relatability.
I was moved by the people that stopped by my humble ‘store’, each visitor being so open and kind, sharing about their lives, and how sari-sari stores have been a part of that.
Very thankful to Carleen Janlewicz, to new friends made over the three days, and of course appreciative of the opportunity.
