Sama-sama

Long time collaborators – award winning multi-hyphenated visual artist and writer, Alyssa Powell-Ascura and experimental sound artist Louis Bullock – undertake their first duo artist residency at Sauerbier House, responding to the area of Onkaparinga through conversations, reciprocity and curiosity.

Sama-sama (meaning Together in Tagalog) is an interactive, conceptual exhibition that bridges visual art, sound and play. The collaborators are inspired to meet the concept of ‘communitas’, speaking of various experiences adding layers to a site, or memory or collective culture.

Developed through the Sauerbier House residency, together, the artists were invited by community members into their homes to prepare a shared meal. In reciprocity, some community members were then invited by the artists for a studio visit and spent time in the communal kitchen. These casual workshops provided meaningful cross-cultural exchanges, informing the exhibition.

The artists aim to open dialogues through their collaborative practice and participatory art approach that challenges traditional boundaries, re-imagining art as a space for connection and collective empowerment.
